Our Milling Process

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your On-Site Sawmilling Appointment

To make the most of your portable milling session, it's important to plan ahead. Here’s how our process works—from log setup to post-milling drying—and how you can prepare to ensure a smooth, efficient job.

1. Preparing the Milling Site

Before we arrive, please arrange your logs parallel to where the sawmill will be set up. This helps us move efficiently from log to log, reduces time spent repositioning equipment, and lowers your overall cost. Make sure the site is accessible, level, and free of debris.

2. Sealing the Logs

We recommend sealing the end grain of your logs as soon as they’re cut to reduce checking and splitting. You can use commercial end-grain sealers (like Anchorseal), or even wax- or latex-based alternatives in a pinch. Sealing slows the drying process at the ends, helping you preserve more usable lumber.

3. Milling On Site

Using our Norwood HD36 portable bandsaw mill, we’ll cut your logs to your desired thickness and board type, right on your property. We can walk you through different cut patterns and wood grain orientations depending on your needs—whether you're planning furniture, construction lumber, or slab work.

4. Air Drying – Stacking & Stickering

Once your lumber is milled, the drying process begins. Proper stacking and stickering is key to getting stable, usable boards:

  • Stack boards flat and evenly, off the ground, on level supports

  • Place stickers (dry, evenly sized spacers) between each layer to allow air circulation

  • Cover the stack to protect it from rain, but leave the sides open for airflow

  • Allow 1 year per inch of thickness for most hardwoods in Minnesota/Wisconsin climates

We’ll gladly provide guidance on best practices to help you get the best results from your freshly milled lumber.
